BACKGROUND TO PROCESS AND DESIGN THEMES

The Sisal décor products are designed around traditional African shapes and the entire production process has been developed for its strength in addressing environmental and sustainability priorities. The raw fibre used is agri-waste, obtained from sisal producing units in South Africa's North West and Limpopo provinces. Sisal is an extremely strong fibre that allows for extensive manipulation and shaping, making it ideal for lifestyle products. The shapes are produced using a resin mould made from a master mould, with some of the shapes being developed from old plastic sheeting, rope and bottle tops. The basic technique allows for an extensive range that can be developed on site, at remote production units. The sisal products are hardened and semi sealed with lead free varnish and the sisal is dyed with various cotton dyes. The finished products fit neatly into one another and are extremely light, allowing for easy transportation.

The Phumani Pets have received positive consumer feedback at several design exhibitions due to their low technology and energy design principles. The pets are available in smooth recycled paper or rough textured sisal finishes. The basic form of the pet is produced using recycled waste paper. The moulds are produced by the Twanano Paper making unit, based in an informal settlement in Gauteng. Twanano Papermaking has been producing and developing Phumani Pets for several years. Phumani Pets are extremely durable and are produced in several different colours. Sisal pets are made using the same technique and are covered in raw sisal fibre. Phumani Paper works with the producer units on new designs and technologies and facilitates collaboration between its National Office product designers (in some cases outsourced) and the various paper producer units. Phumani also mentors the units on all levels of business development within the craft industry, from marketing to business management, financial management and HIV training and self actualisation.
