Viljoenskroon Paper Unit, Ponahalo and De Beers

A joint programme with Ponahalo, DeBeers and Phumani Paper

Project Description

Ponahalo is a Debeers Trust Organization that is an implementing agent for various new initiatives and programmes such as the new Viljoenskroon Papermaking Unit based in the Free State Province.

Ponahalo contacted Phumani Paper in 2008 out of a need based on small business development in the Free State. The area of interest was mainly in the development of Jewelry packaging

Ponahalo has formed a relationship with Phumani through the implementation of a small hand papermaking business based in Viljoenskroon. The enterprise revolves around the production of jewelry packaging and hand papermaking. The jewelry packaging answers to the needs of the mining industry in the surrounding areas as well as the relationship with DeBeers. The implementation of this small packaging and papermaking business contributes to the jewelry design and production industry that is developing around many of the mines. The involvement also leads beneficiation and the promotion of local designers and manufacturers. This concept will be further explored with Voorspoed Mine and DBCM during both the preparation and set up phases.

Phumani Paper is acting as a service provider and is undertaking the following through a 3 year programme:
  • Creating access to markets
  • Product development
  • Training and skills development
  • Mentoring of person from the community (enterprise) to take over project.
  • Governance – establish project steering committee representing all stakeholders which would meet regularly.
  • Reviewing the business and ownership models, i.e., commercializing the project in the long run (+ Year 4)
The Business will be receiving all of the equipment needed for a fully operational hand papermaking business. The members are being mentored across the full spectrum of a craft business including small business development, marketing, product development, stock control, banking, internet and computer training, production output and costing and pricings as well as business communication.

The community has been informed of the programme and members have been selected through an orientation day and a launch in January 2009. Training will extend over a three year period by constant mentoring and business development.
